Head Coach Interview Questions

Please answer the following 6 questions to complete your Head Coach Application, (or supplement your Assistant Coach Application). There are no "right" answers or need to write a lengthy essay; we're simply looking to understanding how you approach coaching.

Your responses will be considered alongside your certification, experience and coaching history - particularly when multiple applicants are being considered for the same team.

1. COACHING PHILOSOPHY & VISION - Describe your team at the end of the season. What does success look like to you?

2. PLAYER DEVELOPMENT PLAN - Players have different abilities, experience and confidence levels. Describe how you would create opportunities for every player to develop throughout the season.

3. ACCOUNTABILITY & DISCIPLINE - How do you establish and maintain accountability within your team? How would you respond if (a) a player repeatedly arrives late for practice, and (b) your team's top scorer consistently refuses to pass or backcheck? For each situation, explain what you would do, what you would say, and why.

4. ICE TIME & GAME MANAGEMENT - Describe your approach to managing ice time. How would you communicate your approach and expectations to players and parents?

5. TEAM CULTURE - What does a positive team culture look like among your players and your coaching staff? Provide an example of something you have done, or would do, to intentionally build that culture.

6. REFLECTION & CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT - Describe a past coaching decision or situation that you would handle differently today. What happened, what did you learn, and how has it influenced your coaching approach?
